I run a small WooCommerce store selling artisan candles. Average order value: $34. Last year I rewrote all 87 product descriptions using a 3-sentence formula and conversions jumped from 2.1% to 4.6%.
Here’s the formula. It works on any product type, any niche, any price point.
The 3-Sentence Formula
Sentence 1: What it IS, in plain words. No marketing speak.
Sentence 2: What problem it SOLVES (or feeling it creates).
Sentence 3: Why THIS one is better than alternatives.
That’s it. No bullet lists. No paragraphs. Three sentences. Done.
Example: Before vs After
Before (my old description for a $24 lavender candle):
“Hand-poured lavender soy candle made with premium ingredients. 60-hour burn time. Ideal for relaxation and creating a peaceful atmosphere in your home or office. Available in 8oz and 12oz sizes.”
Standard “list of facts” description. Conversion rate: 2.1%.
After (3-sentence version):
“This 8oz soy candle smells like a French lavender field at dawn. Light it after a chaotic day and your living room turns into a 60-hour pause button. We use 3x more lavender oil than the average grocery-store candle — that’s why it actually fills the room instead of just smelling nice up close.”
Conversion rate: 4.6%. Same product, same price, same photos.
Why this works (3 reasons)
1. Specificity beats abstraction
“Premium ingredients” means nothing. “3x more lavender oil than grocery-store candles” creates a vivid claim the brain can actually verify.
2. It tells a micro-story
“Light it after a chaotic day” puts the reader IN the moment of using the product. Stories convert. Specs don’t.
3. It earns its claim
The third sentence handles the “why should I believe you?” question before the reader can ask it. Most descriptions skip this entirely.
The 90-second template
For your next product:
- Open the product page
- Set a 90-second timer
- Write three sentences answering: WHAT, WHY, WHY-BETTER
- Stop writing when the timer hits zero
Don’t edit yet. Move to the next product. After all products are done, batch-edit them in one pass.
This is exactly the workflow I use with WP Auto Agent’s WooCommerce Product Writer — but the AI does the 90 seconds for me, and I just review and tweak. 500 products in one evening.
What NOT to include
- Star ratings (Google handles this automatically from reviews)
- Burn-time / dimensions / specs (use product attributes for those)
- “Buy now!” — the buy button does that job
- Hashtags (this isn’t Instagram)
Keep it three sentences. Anything more is filler that hurts conversion.
